In the first picture, it’s me sitting in front of my laptop during online class. It’s very dark, but my bright screen is the only source of light. The second picture is a bunch of scattered masks- essential during this time. The last one is a blurry picture of some of my interests that I’ve especially enjoyed during quarantine including my laptop, a book, a sketchbook, and earbuds to listen to music. All three of them are in black and white.
Since all of my pictures are in B&W, I played with the value a lot and tried to have the dark parts very dark and the light parts really light. When editing the pictures the most important things I did were I turned down the saturation all the way and made the contrast high. Emphasis was also very important in these pieces, so what I did for that was small things like make the screen brighter, photograph the images up close, and played with the size and placement of the objects. For the first one, I really wanted to portray how sad it is that life is nowhere close to normal and won’t be for a while. We aren’t allowed to do the simplest things like play our favorite sport, eat at a local restaurant, go to school, etc. So this piece shows that with the darkness, and the whole picture is centered around that screen (school). The second picture is more simple, it’s just some masks scattered around, but of course we all need them and many of them because you cannot safely go anywhere without wearing one. The last picture shows all my favorite things I did during quarantine to keep myself entertained and inside. But it’s blurry and I did that on purpose because ever since school started I don’t have much time to really enjoy the things I like without missing sleep or falling behind in classes, so by making it blurry it’s like it’s fading away in a sense. I think I was successful in portraying the sadness of virtual learning, and the main ideas of what everyone is experiencing. |
The assignment was to take a picture in forced perspective. I took some others for practice, but I didn't like the way they turned out. For this picture, I took a foam dog I had and made it look more life-sized by putting it closer to the camera and positioning me further. I also tried to help with the perspective by putting my hand down as if I'm petting the dog.

1. Discuss your decision on pen and ink techniques. Why you chose to use one or more. (If you used stippling in certain areas explain why you chose this technique. Explain for all other techniques used).
- I didn't want to use a different technique for each part of it, but I didn't want to solely use one, so I decided on stippling for the Evil Queen's cloak and the princesses hand. I then used cross hatching/hatching for the apple and the wood grain. I assumed this would help create some contrast between each part, but still be unified in that there are only 2 different techniques. 2. How did you use perspective? Why is perspective important? - Perspective was very difficult to create in this drawing to due the objects involved, the limited amount of space I had in the drawing, and what I wanted the emphasis to be on. I did my best to make the wood flooring in the front larger, and getting smaller as they go back, as well as trying to make everything proportional to it's distance. 3. How is texture important in your composition? - Texture was very important because it created different types of values, added a realistic element to the drawing, as well as gave your eye many different things to look at. 4. Why is value so important in this project? - Value is important in every drawing because it makes things look 3-dimensional and more realistic. It also helped me create depth/perspective. 5. Describe your craftsmanship (How well the project is crafted technically) - I believe that the individual elements in this drawing were well done, however all together it's very busy and dark. 6. If you could recreate your piece what would you do differently to enhance your final outcome? - I would make sure I have a back-up pen so I don't have to switch half way through the drawing, I wouldn't make the floor so dark and textured, and I would make the cloak larger and shade it a little differently. 7. (Only answer if you did fairytale) Which Fairytale or Fable did you create? - I recreated Snow White and the 7 dwarves after the princess was poisoned. 8. When applying the pen and ink techniques why and how is it important to make sure you understand the concepts taught in class? - It's important to understand how to use pen because if you mess up it can be extremely difficult to fix. Elements can be too dark, textures may not look the same, etc. |

I practiced shading spheres and cones with colored pencils using different different pieces of paper, and a variety of colors on each sheet.

1. What watercolor/colored pencil techniques proved to be effective in your painting/drawing? How and why?
- I learned that using dry on dry was effective for creating texture, and wet on dry was good for color saturation. 2. How important was using transparent layers (just layers for colored pencil) in your painting/drawing? - I didn't use colored pencils, but using transparent layers was helpful in creating values. 3. Explain how your composition was successful? Did you utilize all the elements of art and principles of design? Explain. - I think this painting was successful in that I've never worked with watercolors before. My lines aren't super messy, I added texture, value, and different colors that are all saturated. 4. Was color choice an important factor in the overall success of the painting/drawing? Why? - Color choice was very important in help making the painting look realistic and not cartoon-ish. 5. How did you use your knowledge of Georgia O’Keeffe as inspiration for this piece? - I knew that Georgia O'Keeffe always uses a close-up composition, so I decided to take that into account when sketching out my painting. 6. Describe your craftsmanship. - As stated before, I think this is a pretty good painting in that the lines are clear, the colors are pretty well blended, and I did well creating texture in the center of the flower. 7. If you were able to do something different what would it be and why? - I would fix the edges of the petals, as well as add more highlights. 8. Explain to me what you have learned about watercolor/colored pencil and how it has improved or discouraged your development in art. - I learned that using watercolors is more difficult than I thought and I need to be more careful in how much water/paint I use. I also need to be more aware of details and pay attention to how it actually looks compared to my "cartoon" image of what it looks like in my head. |

Describe why you chose your subject matter and what makes the composition interesting?
- I chose this image because I visited this place a couple years ago- Ketchikan, Alaska. I thought this picture was particularly interesting because of all of the colors in the houses, and the angle the picture was taken at. Describe the accuracy of your proportion, values and shading. - I think that my proportions were accurate, but it was difficult to exactly replicate where everything was placed, and the composition. How did you use texture to add visual interest? - I used a variety of shades and tones as well as different shapes to create different values and textures. How did you decide what shapes and textures to use for your collage? - I used geometric shapes with sharp edges for all the pieces in my collage that resembled the shapes of the larger object its taking up. For example, for the trees I used thin triangles pointing down to create a more realistic pine look. Do you feel that you used a full range of values to reproduce your photo in the collage format? How have you attempted to create depth using foreground, middle ground and background? - I believe that yes, I used a full range of values, they just weren't represented well or placed in the right area due to a lack of planning and lack of resources. I attempted to create depth by making the objects in the back smaller. Describe your craftsmanship. Is the artwork executed and neatly crafted? - This piece of artwork isn't extremely neat, but it's a collage, so I don't believe that it needs to be. I think I was creative in my variety of shapes, sizes, and colors, and that makes this very unique. Describe how you might improve your artwork if you were to redo the project? - To improve my artwork, I would be more careful with the pieces of magazine and make sure there aren't gaps. I would also plan a little more where I wanted the darker and lighter colors to go. |
